A Program of Huliau o Waiʻanae
The Kānaka ʻŌiwi Advisory Hui is a leadership initiative within Huliau o Waiʻanae a turning point grounded in intergenerational learning and community-driven solutions.
Participants strengthened environmental literacy by exploring water quality data, wastewater systems, landfill exposure, and coastal circulation impacts. Through Government 101 sessions, members learned how agencies function, how policies are shaped, and how to effectively engage public processes. The program also included leadership development and introductory grant writing skills to help participants move from concern to action equipping them to advocate, organize, and seek resources for community-led solutions.
Rooted in ʻike kupuna and lived experience, the Hui built confidence in civic engagement and environmental decision-making.
Beyond the program, members continue engaging in testimony, supporting monitoring efforts, mentoring youth, and helping secure funding to advance environmental health initiatives. Huliau represents an ongoing shift strengthening community leadership to ensure land and water decisions reflect both science and the wellbeing of our families.

So far, I've learned how to be effective as a Kānaka ʻŌiwi. Through the ʻike being shared within this group, utilizing the tools needed to be effective and building the relationships we need within lāhui, I feel that I can be confident going into the world to make a difference.
I look forward to growing and learning more alongside within this cohort, and to contribite to the vision we all share.

I joined the Kānaka ʻŌiwi Advisory Hui because I am passionate about advocating for the land and wildlife who cannot speak for themselves.
Since joining the hui, I’ve learned the importance of collaboration, gained insight into issues directly affecting Waiʻanae, and have begun growing into a more confident public speaker.
