Kānaka 'Ōiwi Advisory Hui

Kingdom Pathways is a Native Hawaiian, community-driven non-profit dedicated to environmental restoration, cultural preservation, and social justice in Waiʻanae, Oʻahu. The Kānaka ‘Ōiwi Advisory Hui (KOA) is seeking passionate individuals to serve as advisors and actively contribute to advancing environmental and climate justice initiatives. Members will play a vital role in bridging the community with policymakers, ensuring that Native Hawaiian values and environmental concerns are central to decision-making processes.


Job Summary:

We are seeking individuals that can commit 3-years designed to cultivate leadership and sustainability skills while shaping policies that safeguard our ʻāina for future generations. Members will gain hands-on experience in Leadership Development, Environmental Stewardship, Public Engagement, Government Processes, and Grant Writing and Fundraising, empowering them to drive meaningful change in their communities. The Hui will oversee the Kupuna Keiki Program, fostering environmental education and intergenerational learning in Waiʻanae. This initiative pairs Kupuna (elders) with Keiki (children) to share traditional knowledge and skills, strengthening community bonds. Through workshops and collaborative projects, Kupuna and Keiki will address environmental issues together while ensuring that youth and elders voices often unheard inform the Hui’s work.


Detailed Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance on environmental and climate justice issues affecting Native Hawaiian communities.
  • Train on water and air quality monitoring and collect data to inform policy recommendations.
  • Engage in community outreach, educating residents about septic and cesspool management, water and air quality, and land use.
  • Work with government agencies to promote culturally grounded solutions.
  • Assist in organizing town halls, workshops, and public forums to elevate community voices.
  • Support the Kupuna Keiki Program by fostering intergenerational knowledge sharing and environmental problem-solving.


Experience Required:

We are looking for a passionate, community-driven individual who believes in mālama ʻāina and empowering people through knowledge. The ideal candidate will have:


  • Strong commitment to Native Hawaiian values and environmental justice.
  • Interest or experience in environmental science, policy, community organizing, or advocacy.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Willingness to participate in citizen science activities and educate the community.
  • Ability to engage in government processes to drive policy change.


Schedule:

Members of the Kānaka ‘Ōiwi Advisory Hui (KOA) will serve in a part-time capacity, working up to 18 hours per week. This role offers flexibility, with work primarily being remote, though occasional in-person meetings or site visits may be required.
